Florida Congresswoman wants to bring back US soldiers buried in France

Kansas City Star 16.03.03 In another swipe at the French, a Florida congresswoman has proposed that the government pay for families who might want to bring home from France the remains of Americans who fought and died in the world wars... "I, along with many other Americans, do not feel that the French government appreciates the sacrifices men and women in uniform have made to defend the freedom that the French enjoy today," Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite said in introducing legislation providing financial help for the reburial of veterans from the two world wars."

A talking carp, shouting in Hebrew

New York Times - 15.03.03
But Mr. Rosen said that when he approached the fish he heard it uttering warnings and commands in Hebrew. "It said `Tzaruch shemirah' and `Hasof bah,' " he said, "which essentially means that everyone needs to account for themselves because the end is near." The fish commanded Mr. Rosen to pray and to study the Torah and identified itself as the soul of a local Hasidic man who died last year, childless. The man often bought carp at the shop for the Sabbath meals of poorer village residents.

PENTAGON THREATENS TO KILL INDEPENDENT REPORTERS IN IRAQ

GuluFuture.com et The Register 10th March, 2003
The Pentagon has threatened to fire on the satellite uplink positions of independent journalists in Iraq, according to veteran BBC war correspondent, Kate Adie . In an interview with Irish radio, Ms. Adie said that questioned about the consequences of such potentially fatal actions, a senior Pentagon officer had said: "Who cares.. ..They've been warned." According to Ms. Adie, who twelve years ago covered the last Gulf War, the Pentagon attitude is: "entirely hostile to the the free spread of information."

Fake documents embarass Powell

CNN - 14.03.03
"Intelligence documents that U.S. and British governments said were strong evidence that Iraq was developing nuclear weapons have been dismissed as forgeries by U.N. weapons inspectors... Sources said that one of the documents was a letter discussing the uranium deal supposedly signed by Niger President Tandja Mamadou. The sources described the signature as "childlike" and said that it clearly was not Mamadou's."

U.S. Dominance in Space Makes General 'Pity the Enemy'

American Forces Press Service - 12.03.03
Anybody who goes against the massive space capability of the U.S. military "is in for a tough go," Air Force Maj. Gen. Franklin J. "Judd" Blaisdell told reporters during a Pentagon press briefing today. "Whether it's Iraq or any other enemy of the United States and its allies, I would tell you that we're so dominant in space that I would pity a country that would come up against us," said Blaisdell, the Air Force's director of space operations and integration. "The synergy with air, land and sea forces and our ability to control the battle space and seize the high ground is devastating. "I don't believe that many of them understand how powerful we are," the general told reporters. "All countries respect the power of the United States and they respect how dominant we are in this region."

Fuque the French

Times 17.03.03
"The message scrawled on the side of an American bunker-busting bomb being wheeled out into the desert was blunt: "Fuque the French" had been scrawled on the side by a member of the US Air Force...."I don’t think that is necessary. France is still an ally" ... "The names have changed but the terms of abuse have remained as primitive as ever. It’s not a sophisticated art form."

Boycott : la Maison-Blanche ne condamne pas les initiatives anti-françaises

Le coût de la guerre aura des répercussion très négatives sur le secteur des technologies aux USA

The perfect storm hovering over tech

Declan McCullagh - New.com.com - 17.03.03
WASHINGTON--Don't look now, but the capital's near-insatiable appetite for government spending may not bode well for technology firms. A combination of fiscal and political factors--including the pending invasion of Iraq, global concern about the stability of U.S. markets, and ballooning federal deficits--might wind up combining to trash technology stocks and further tighten the noose on venture capital. Forget last week's modest 2.5 percent rise in the Nasdaq index. What I'm talking about is the possibility of longer-term problems over the next five years with a much gloomier outlook. For this you can blame President George W. Bush's lack of fiscal restraint--and the cravens in Congress who acquiesce to irresponsible spending programs.

Oscars blacklist stars

The Scotsman 15.03.03
"The backlash against prominent stars opposing any attack on Iraq has impacted on this year's Oscars, with organisers drawing up a blacklist of people who will not be allowed a platform to air anti-war views... Meryl Streep, Sean Penn, Vanessa Redgrave, George Clooney, Dustin Hoffman and Spike Lee are among those who will not be speaking, amid fears they could turn the ceremony into an anti-war rally.

Avis d'expert: la menace cyberterroriste est totalement surestimée

Cyberterrorism: a overhyped menace

BBC - 14.03.03
"Respected security expert Bruce Schneier said the threat posed by so-called cyber-terrorism had been over-estimated. "The hype is coming from the US Government and I don't know why," he said. Fellow panel member Art Coviello, head of security firm RSA, said some of the warnings about cyber-terrorism had come about in reaction to the attacks on 11 September."

FLYING SPYBOTS TO WATCH AMERICAN CITIES

News.com - 17.03.03
In 1998, DARPA began funding a project to create spybots that can fly day and night and that use infrared and video sensors. These spybots, being designed by Lockheed Martin and code-named MicroStar, will have a six-inch wingspan, weigh only 86 grams and cost about $10,000--an affordable price point for surveilling Americans from above. And what of the spybots' larger cousins, capable of hovering higher and seeing more for a longer duration? Last week The Washington Post reported that the federal government may permit unmanned aircraft to fly above the United States. "I believe that the potential applications for this technology in the area of homeland defense are quite compelling," said Sen. John Warner, R-Va., chairman of the Senate Armed Services committee, who added that the drones could be used by domestic police agencies.

FBI Has Fleet of Aircraft Helping to Track Suspects in War on Terror

Associated Press - 14.03.03
The FBI has a fleet of aircraft, some equipped with night surveillance and eavesdropping equipment, flying America's skies to track and collect intelligence from suspected terrorists. The FBI will not provide exact figures on the planes and helicopters, but more than 80 are in the skies. There are several planes, known as "Nightstalkers," equipped with infrared devices that allow agents to track people and vehicles in the dark. Other aircraft are outfitted with electronic surveillance equipment so agents can pursue listening devices placed in cars, in buildings and even along streets, or listen to cell phone calls. Still others fly photography missions, although officials would not describe precise capabilities. Some critics say the surveillance technology further blurs the boundaries on domestic spying. They point to a 2001 case in which the Supreme Court found police had engaged in an unreasonable search by using thermal imaging equipment to detect heat lamps used to grow marijuana plants indoors.

PayPal switches off indy news site account

The Register 17.03.03
A US independent news site which relies upon reader donations has had some of its air supply cut off by PayPal. In a email sent to WhatReallyHappened.com yesterday, PayPal's Orwellian-sounding "Merchant Risk Department" wrote: As you know, the PayPal User Agreement states that PayPal, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to close an account at any time for any reason. We write to inform you that, after a review of your site, and in accordance with the User Agreement, your account has been closed. Your funds will be held for 180 days from the date of the last transaction on the account. After 180 days have expired, we will refund your funds by mailing a check to the address linked to your account. Now, as an experiment, type the words "PayPal" and "Porno" into any search engine. I used Google and got a list of hundreds of pornography web sites that PayPal does not seem to have any qualms about doing business with!

L'allergie aux arachides... nouveau mal du siècle ?

What We Now Know About Nuts

Time Europe 17.03.03
It's a medical mystery that has baffled researchers: Why have peanut allergies tripled in the past decade? For those afflicted - between one in 70 and one in 200 people in the U.K. - even a trace of the nut or its oil can cause hives or, in extreme cases, death. Now researchers at Britain's Bristol University have found a clue as to what is going on. Using information from a 14-year study that followed 14,000 children in southwest England from before birth, the team discovered that 84% of those who developed the allergy had been treated with creams containing peanut oil. They also found that children who had been fed milk from soybeans, which contain similar proteins, had a 2.6 times greater chance of becoming allergic. The Bristol group believes the reaction develops primarily in children with rashes or eczema, where the skin creams containing peanut oil enter the body through damaged skin. Help may soon be at hand for those at risk. Scientists working for Britain's Food Standards Agency have developed a test so sensitive that it can identify traces of peanut as small as one part in 10 million. And U.S. pharmaceutical company Tanox is reporting good results from a new drug to control the body's response to the presence of the nut or its oil.
