SPECIAL DEDICACE

Scientists prove that Chimps are 99% human

[Discovery Channel 20.05.03]
Chimpanzees share 99.4 percent of functionally important DNA with humans and belong in our genus, Homo, according to a recent genetic study. Previous studies put the genetic similarity between humans and chimps at 95 to 99 percent, so the new figure suggests chimps and humans are even more closely related than previously thought.
The DNA information, combined with the ancestral links, should result in a new family tree, with the genus Homo including humans, common chimpanzees, and bonobo chimpanzees.

Guerre nucléaire en Afghanistan ?

Afghanis show high level of radiation in tests

[BBC 22.05.03]
A small sample of Afghan civilians have shown 'astonishing' levels of uranium in their urine, an independent scientist says. ... The UMRC says its team identified several hundred people suffering from illnesses and conditions similar to those of Gulf veterans, probably because they had inhaled uranium dust. ... To test its hypothesis that some form of uranium weapon had been used, the UMRC sent urine specimens from 17 Afghans for analysis at an independent UK laboratory. It says: 'Without exception, every person donating urine specimens tested positive for uranium internal contamination. The results were astounding: the donors presented concentrations of toxic and radioactive uranium isotopes between 100 and 400 times greater than in the Gulf veterans tested in 1999.

Traffic court judge accuses woman of funding terror

[Toronto Star 20.05.03]
An Arab-American woman who was in court to fight a parking ticket fainted when the judge asked her if she was a terrorist. ... Anissa Khoder told The Journal News that when her name was called, the judge asked if she was a terrorist. She said she was offended but kept that to herself. She claimed that after giving the judge her explanation for why the tickets should be dismissed, 'he said something like, "You have money to support the terrorists, but you don't want to pay the ticket." I could not believe I was hearing that.' She collapsed but recovered as officers took her outside. ... 'I love this country. It is my country. There's no Arabic music in my home. BBC exposé says Jessica Lynch rescue faked

[Globe and Mail 22.02.03]
"The morale-boosting, too-good-to-be-true rescue of Pte. Jessica Lynch by U.S. special forces is put under close scrutiny by the BBC documentary War Spin: The Truth About Jessica , airing Sunday night on CBC Newsworld's Passionate Eye. The special uncovers major discrepancies in the Pentagon's Rambo-like interpretation of the rescue in Iraq and concludes the incident is one of the most stunning pieces of news management ever conceived." This story is just not going to go away.

[News.com.com 23.05.03]

EU wants Privacy Enhancing Technologies

[OpenGroup 20.05.03]
EU is presently fighting hard to put Privacy at the center of the Information Society to build Trust and Security after the political response to Sept. 11. The focus on PETs are growing and several initiatives seems to be on the move. Even though the respect for the fight against terrorism certainly have not been reduced, there is a clear understanding that sacrificing freedom is not the answer as it just provides more reasonst. The Edmund Bourke qoute "For Evil to prevail .." seems to have a clearer meaning in these years. History will hopefully show that this was one of the most critical efforts to preserve and ensure Freedom in a critical moment when it was under attack from all sides. It deserves all the support possible.

California tracking activists in terror database

Anything that disrupts commerce is terrorism - so a strike is a terrorist act

[Oakland Tribune 20.05.03]
CATIC touted as a national model for intelligence sharing and a centerpiece of Gov. Gray Davis and Attorney General Bill Lockyer's 2002 re-election bids has quietly gathered and analyzed information on activists of various stripes almost since its creation. The reason given for this by officials is that public protests often block traffic, blocking traffic impedes commerce, and anything that impedes commerce is a terrorist act. Officer : "I've heard terrorism described as anything that is violent or has an economic impact, and shutting down a port certainly would have some economic impact. Terrorism isn't just bombs going off and killing people."

African slave trave alive and well in UK

[The Observer 22.05.03]
Children are being trafficked into domestic service in Britain to clean houses and do chores without pay. The victims are mostly west African girls, lured on the promise of a Western education, only to find themselves forced to do heavy chores for wealthy families. ... It is thought that a significant percentage of up to 10,000 largely west African children thought to enter the UK for private fostering are in fact destined for an underground world of domestic service. 'They don't speak the language, and probably wouldn't go to school,' said a spokesman for Unicef."

Zap Me ! The 80,000-volt jacket !

[Wired 22.05.03]
A new anti-assault device for women wards off potential assailants with an 80,000-volt electric shock. Dubbed 'exo-electric armor,' the No-Contact Jacket looks like an ordinary fashionable women's coat. But an inner layer of conductive fiber carries a low-amp charge that delivers a nasty but non-lethal shock to anyone who messes with its wearer. ... The jacket is designed for women only. Its small size and narrow armholes are intended to prevent men from using it as an offensive weapon. Whiton conceded that women could use it offensively, and that it would be hard for police to arrest anyone wearing one.

Buzz et Bluff

[L'expansion 22.05.03]
