WAKING UP FROM THE AMERICAN DREAM

[AlterNet 24.12.03]
The other day I found myself reading a leftist rag that made outrageous claims about America. It said that we are becoming a society in which the poor tend to stay poor, no matter how hard they work; in which sons are much more likely to inherit the socioeconomic status of their father than they were a generation ago. The name of the leftist rag? BUSINESS WEEK, which published an article titled 'Waking Up From the American Dream.'

The article summarizes recent research showing that social mobility in the United States (which was never as high as legend had it) has declined considerably over the past few decades. If you put that research together with other research that shows a drastic increase in income and wealth inequality, you reach an uncomfortable conclusion: America looks more and more like a class-ridden society."

INFORMATIONS GENERALES

COURT SUSPENDS BUSH POLLUTION RULES

[Reuters 24.12.03]
A federal court on Wednesday halted a Bush administration plan to allow power plants, oil refineries and other industrial facilities to make upgrades to aging plants without installing costly new air pollution control equipment.

A coalition of environmental groups and states sued to stop the new rules issued by the Environmental Protection Agency, saying the policy changes violated the federal Clean Air Act and would result in more emissions being spewed into the air. Emissions from coal-fired power plants and refineries can aggravate asthma, chronic bronchitis and pneumonia.

The U.S. appeals court in Washington, agreed to temporarily set aside the changes to the EPA's "new source review" rules and said they could not take effect until the lawsuit challenging their legality was finished.

The Bush administration has been criticized by Democrats and green groups for relaxing several environmental protection rules at the behest of energy companies. The industry contends the changes simply reflect the administration's analysis of scientific evidence and costs.

DANISH ETHICS PANEL CENSURED FOR CRITIQUE OF BOOK

[The NY Times December 23, 2003]
Danish government agency has concluded that a scientific ethics panel erred earlier this year when it ruled that a popular book on environmental trends displayed "scientific dishonesty."

The book, "The Skeptical Environmentalist," by Dr. Bjorn Lomborg, (http://uk.cambridge.org/economics/lomborg/) a Danish statistician, rebuts contentions by environmental groups that the planet is in peril and has been acclaimed by conservative groups and some scientists since it was published in English in 2001.

Dr. Lomborg's book reviewed reams of data on forests, climate change, food supplies, population growth and other issues, challenging what he called the "environmental litany": predictions of imminent crises from rising temperatures, dwindling resources and destruction of habitat.

The book has been criticized elsewhere, notably in Scientific American, which in January 2002 published an 11-page deconstruction of Dr. Lomborg's arguments and later engaged in a series of rebuttals and counterrebuttals with him.

Dr. Patrick J. Michaels, a climate scientist with the Cato Institute, a libertarian research group in Washington, said the criticisms of Dr. Lomborg were part of a broader effort by "the keepers of the environmental-gloom paradigm" to attack anyone with a contrarian view.

TESTICLE THEATER STRECHES ACTING BOUNDARIES

[The New York Times 24.12.03]
A ballsy man in Boston is testing the boundaries of acting - by making his testicles do the work. The man, who calls himself "Sackie Gleason," runs a website called testicletheater.com (http://www.testicletheater.com), where he puts his testes to the test by dressing them up in costumes and making them act out scenes from "Macbeth, Enter The Dragon" and "Thelma And Louise."

Sure, it's nutty but Gleason sincerely believes his "multi-talented testicles" expose the works of Stanley Kubrick, John Cassavettes and Sam Peckinpah to a new audience. That doesn't mean Gleason wants to keep his testicles confined to a film set. His true love is the live stage and he gleefully admits his testes thrive during "live theatrical interpretations on request."

NO SEX PLEASE, YOU'RE CHINESE

[Associated Press December 24, 2003]
AN ISRAELI company has required thousands of Chinese workers to sign a contract promising not to have sex with Israelis or try to convert them, a police spokesman said today. According to the document, male workers cannot come into contact with Israeli women - including prostitutes - become their lovers or marry them, spokesman Rafi Yaffe said.

The spokesman said there was nothing illegal about the requirement and no investigation had been opened against the company.

The labourers are also forbidden in the contract from engaging in any religious or political activity. Those who violate the agreement will be sent back to China at their own expense. About 260,000 foreigners work in Israel, having replaced Palestinian labourers during three years of fighting.

When the government first began to allow the entrance of the foreign workers in the late 1990s, ministers warned of a "social time bomb" caused by workers assimilating with Israelis.

Israeli advocates for foreign workers - who come also from Thailand, the Philippines and Romania - say they are held by employers in nearly slave-like conditions, and their bosses frequently take their passports and refuse to pay them.

42 % AMERICANS CONSIDER ISRAEL A THREAT TO WORLD PEACE

[USA Media Monitor 24 December 2003]
According to a recent poll by the Anti-Defamation League, forty-two percent of the American people consider Israel as a threat to world peace. What's even more astonishing is the result of a recent European poll that found 59 percent of Europeans considered Israel as the major threat to world peace with the United States coming in second. Libya wasn't even mentioned.

ISRAEL'S THREAT TO WORLD PEACE

[USA Media Monitor 24 December 2003]
Libya has never been a threat to the United States, and for that matter, Iraq was never a threat to the United States. The only threat Iraq or Libya posed was a threat to Israel's dominance of nuclear weapons in the Middle East." (Brigadier General James J. David U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College, National Defense University, Washington DC).

It seems that the entire world is praising American and British diplomacy for its efforts in convincing Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in announcing that Libya would cease work on its programs to develop nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. This is quite an accomplishment, considering that Libya has been listed for more than 17years by the U.S. State Department as one of the major countries supporting state terrorism.

As wonderful as this news may be, the United States needs to concentrate its efforts towards the real obstacle to world peace. Libya was no threat to world peace, and neither was Iraq. If the United States devotes as much effort in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as they did with Libya's weapons of mass destruction then maybe the American people could rest a bit easier.

VIOLENCE ET TERRORISME : L'INVERSION MALIGNE

[Bruno Guigue 15.11.03]

BAHRAINI WOMEN PROTEST CHIRAC'S CALL AGAINST SCARF

[Reuters Thu December 25, 2003]
Women wearing Muslim headscarves raised banners and chanted slogans in the Gulf Arab state of Bahrain Thursday to protest at French government plans to ban overt religious symbols in France's state schools. Around 100 Bahraini women, covered head-to-toe in full-length gowns, gathered outside the French embassy to urge Muslim communities worldwide to denounce the measure announced last week by President Jacques Chirac.

"Why don't they abide by the democracy they claim they have? Or is it only slogans?" said a demonstrator carrying a banner which read: "I am proud of my Hijab (Muslim headscarf)!" The ban on Muslim headscarves would extend to other religious symbols including Jewish skullcaps and large Christian crosses, but France's top Muslim representatives said it mainly targeted Islam and would alienate France's five million Muslims. "(Chirac's) call is rejected even from a humanitarian point of view because, as the West says, women are free to wear what they want," said Sayyed Jaffar al-Alawi, head of Al-Resalah, one of two Islamic societies organizing the event.

"We organized this demonstration to send a message to the French community that we support Muslim women in France in wearing their Hijab (Muslim headscarf)," he told Reuters.

US MEDIA, GOVERNMENT SCRAMBLE TO OBSCURE CRIMINAL DEALINGS WITH HUSSEIN

[World Socialist Web 24 December 2003]
Despite the orgy of self-congratulation that greeted the capture of Saddam Hussein, this is yet another “victory” that is proving to have unforeseen and bitter consequences for the Bush administration.

As reports begin to seep into the press of the history of dirty dealings between the former Iraqi president and the administrations of Reagan and Bush senior, one must suspect that the present occupant of the White House, not to mention his Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, regret that the military forces that located Hussein did not shoot him on the spot rather than take him into custody.

Now the administration confronts the danger that a trial of Hussein—especially one held under international auspices that affords the ex-president the opportunity to mount a genuine legal defense—will expose the direct and deep involvement of the United States government in the most serious crimes of which Hussein stands accused, particularly the use of chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s.

POX AMERICANA (CONTINUED)

[Boston Phoenix 26.12.03]
The free Iraqis soon began to take to the streets to protest deplorable conditions exacerbated by the war, as well as civilian casualties and the absolute absence of public safety. They also had some religious scores to settle and clearly didn’t appreciate the presence of troops supremely commanded by a born-again Christian. They will be even less happy when the several thousand missionaries authorized by Bush arrive to save their pagan souls. People who drop death from above really should be careful about implying that salvation emanates from the same point of origin. The power was out, water was scarce, looted hospitals were unable to provide care, and Western devils were everywhere. On two consecutive days, Americans opened fire on protesters outside an Iraqi school where the soldiers were holed up.. Considering all the National Guard troops the US had over there, Qent State was bound to happen sooner or later.

ARABE = TERRORISTE

SYMANTEC CANS ANOTHER COUNTERFEITER

[The register 23/12/2003]
A US court has awarded Symantec, best known for its antivirus and security software, a $3 million judgment against Baltimore-based Maryland Internet Marketing for selling counterfeit Symantec software. Symantec says that Maryland Internet Marketing was the largest source of spammed e-mails circulating in the US selling counterfeit Symantec software. As a result of the case, the frequency of these emails has dropped dramatically and a considerable amount of counterfeit product has been taken out of circulation, Symantec believes. The fact that CEO George Moore was held personally accountable - he has to pay $300,000 in damages to Symantec - speaks volumes for the severity of the crime, the company says.

JANE DOE RULING LIMITS EFFECT OF RIAA LEGAL DEFEAT

[The register 23/12/2003]
On Friday, the DC federal appeals court ruled that the recording industry's efforts to subpoena the names and addresses of ISP Verizon's customers who were using P2P file-sharing networks to download and upload copyrighted music were unlawful. However, the decision rests on a narrow reading of the federal Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), and likely will have little long-term impact on the file sharing debate.

In fact, at the same time the DC court was narrowing the ability to get discovery of anonymous users of the Internet, a court in Connecticut reinforced a private company's right to determine the identity of a person who anonymously criticized the company in e-mail.

The rulings both go to the core of that most cherished and reviled privilege of online life: anonymity.

THE USB DONGLE: A FORM FACTOR WORTH PLUGGING?

[The Register 23/12/2003]
I've recently been experimenting with those USB Flash drives that seem to be proliferating at the moment. Natty little things, they hold anything from 16MB of data and support recent versions of Windows, Linux and the Mac OS, meaning that the information they contain can be accessed on any current computer with a spare USB port. For older machines, drivers are normally supplied - for some reason every manufacturer seems to have a different device driver, which is a shame, but not the end of the world. They're handy for back-ups, neat for file transfer, a good little floppy disk replacement.. My personal favourite is from Corega, not least because it is bright yellow and easy to find, and also it's a bit more robust than some of them. Of this, more later - what's apparent is that the potential for the dod-of-plastic-with-USB form factor is yet to be fully exploited.
