CAR CRASHES INTO HOUSE - TV WATCHING KIDS DON'T EVEN NOTICE
[Melbourne Herald Sun 19.08.04]
A driverless car crashed into the lounge room of a home in Melbourne today but the five children watching TV in another room were too engrossed to notice. Police believed the car was left parked without its handbrake on. The sedan rolled about 40m and clipped a tree before crashing into the house in Landscape Drive in Boronia, in Melbourne's west. The children were home alone and did not hear the crash.
Their father, Alec Menzies, told Ten news he heard about the crash and rang his daughter. "Just put the phone down and walk into the lounge room and come back," he told her. Mr Menzies said he then heard a scream down the phone before his daughter came back on the line and said: "There's a car in the lounge room."

RETIREMENT IN PERIL
[Jonathan Tasini - TomPaine - August 12, 2004]
United Airlines’ attempt to shed responsibility for its multi-billion pension promises isn’t just an ominous warning for workers at United and other companies in the airline industry that may follow United’s lead. It’s another sure sign of the Wal-Martization of America: the coming collapse of the traditional private sector pension plan system, mainly because of the decline of unions.
Guaranteed pensions—a pillar of the middle class in America—are on the chopping block. (Jonathan Tasini is president of the Economic Future Group and writes his "Working In America" columns for TomPaine.com on an occasional basis.)

WHY IS BIG MEDIA LOSING VIEWERS? BECAUSE IT SUCKS
Watching the coverage of this week's Democratic National Convention, I've seen endless amounts of media handwringing about the coverage of this week's Democratic National Convention. Why are people turning to comedy news like The Daily Show ? Why are people turning to partisan outlets like Fox News and talk radio? Why are people reading untalented webloggers?
After some consideration, Big Media has concluded it's the people's fault. They've become to partisan, shallow, and stupid to handle healthy, traditional news, so they've abandoned it for lesser outlets. While this storyline is no doubt convenient for the people espousing it (see, we're not doing anything wrong - it's their fault!) it doesn't seem quite right to me. The actual answer, which lies unspoken between the lines of all discussion on the subject, is much simpler: people are abandoning Big Media because it sucks.

ELECTRONIC VOTING SYSTEM REMAINS 'TERRIBLY VULNERABLE' TO FRAUD
[Washington Times 26.08.04]
Maryland's electronic voting system remains 'terribly vulnerable' to fraud, despite steps taken by the state to correct security flaws, a consultant who conducted a study of the system last January testified yesterday. Michael Wertheimer of RABA Technologies said his review of the latest report by the State Board of Elections on what it is doing to protect the integrity of the November election 'leads me to the opinion this system still would receive a failing grade.' ... RABA Technologies was hired by the state legislature in January to evaluate the Diebold Election Systems machines after two other reports said that they were riddled with potential security flaws. That study, headed by Mr. Wertheimer, found that the system had many vulnerabilities that could be exploited by people trying to influence the outcome of an election.

PUBLIC POWER IN THE AGE OF EMPIRE
[Arundhati Roy - 16.08.04]
Transcript of speech given in San Francisco, California on August 16th, 2004.
I've been asked to speak about "Public Power in the Age of Empire." I'm not used to doing as I'm told, but by happy coincidence, it's exactly what I'd like to speak about tonight. When language has been butchered and bled of meaning, how do we understand "public power"? When freedom means occupation, when democracy means neo-liberal capitalism, when reform means repression, when words like "empowerment" and "peacekeeping" make your blood run cold - why, then, "public power" could mean whatever you want it to mean. A biceps building machine, or a Community Power Shower. So, I'll just have to define "public power" as I go along, in my own self-serving sort of way.

RESCUE DOG FROM WTC DEAD FROM CANCER
[New York Daily News 27.08.04]
Fourteen search and rescue dogs have died since their exposure to toxic rubble from the Sept. 11 terrorist attack - including eight from cancer, according to a study by the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. But researchers believe there is no connection between the deaths and the chemicals they were exposed to... 'We can't find any link at this point that ties the 14 deaths to events of Sept. 11,' said Dr. Cynthia Otto, the study's lead researcher. 'Some have passed away, but the causes of death are no different than in the control group... however we need to monitor these dogs until the end of their lives - for the dogs' sake and for people's sake. If there is a problem in the dogs down the line, there is a good chance a similar problem could be found in people.'

[South Florida Sun-Sentinel 26.08.04]
"The state Judicial Qualifications Commission on Wednesday released a notice of formal charges detailing a series of 'rude, intemperate and demeaning comments' (Orange County Judge Alan C. Todd) allegedly made to several people working in the Orange County court system.
Upon learning in January that Orange County Deputy Sheriff Mindy Hood was an unwed mother, Todd chastised the woman and told Hood 'it is acceptable for a male to have sex before marriage, but if a female does so, she is not respected and considered a tramp,' according to the notice of charges. He also questioned the kind of family Hood came from and said her family 'obviously had no morals,' according to the six-page document...
He referred to another female deputy as a 'deputite' and said only a male deputy assigned to his courtroom was a 'real deputy.' ... Todd asked the deputy about personal matters, inquiring, 'What are you girls doing tonight? What do you do as lesbians?' according to the complaint."

Avi Shlaim se demande: et si c'était les Iraniens qui avaient manipulé George Bush pour éliminer leur vieil ennemi Saddam et ouvrir un champ politique aux chiites pro-iraniens ?
IT IS THE IRANIANS WHO HAVE HAD THE LAST LAUGH
INTERVIEW WITH MIDDLE EAST SCHOLAR AVI SHLAIM
[The Nation - interview Avi Shlaim - 16.06.04]
Avi Shlaim is a fellow of St. Antony's College and a professor of international relations at the University of Oxford. He was born in Baghdad on October 31, 1945, and grew up in Israel, where he did national service in 1964-66. He read history at Cambridge University in Britain, and has remained in that country ever since, holding dual Israeli and British citizenship. Professor Shlaim is the author of numerous books, most notably The Iron Wall: Israel and the Arab World, and is a regular contributor to The Guardian, the leading liberal British broadsheet. He is widely regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on the Israeli-Arab conflict.
** Question: Iran and Syria are also on the Bush Administration neocons' list for intervention. Do you think the ongoing debacle in Iraq has effectively ruled out military action against these two nations?
** Avi Shlaim : The neocons had an ambitious agenda for the Middle East, and they were going to bring about regime change in Iraq as the first step in implementing a broader agenda. They wanted to turn Iraq into a model for the rest of the Arab world and the Middle East in general. The next targets were Syria and Iran, and after the initial successes during the war in Iraq, there were moves toward the regime in Damascus. American officials said that Syria was helping the remnants of the Saddam regime by smuggling weapons into Iraq and helping Iraqis to escape and find refuge in Syria. No evidence was produced to implicate Syria, so the rhetoric has died down. America is embroiled in a quagmire in Iraq, and it is in no position to invade or attack Syria, even if it wanted to. Iran is a bit more complicated. Iran is of course, one of the original members of the "axis of evil," alongside Iraq and North Korea; and Iran also poses a long-term threat to Israel--particularly if it acquires nuclear weapons.
So the neoconservatives, who care deeply about Israel's security, wanted to eliminate the Iranian threat to Israel. There was again talk of attacking Iran, and there was some loose talk about wiping out Iran's nuclear program and nuclear installations; but now this talk is not heard anymore, because America is embroiled in Iraq without an easy way out. What has emerged recently is that Iran manipulated the neocons into attacking Iraq in order to get rid of this very awkward neighbor, Saddam Hussein. There were some revelations a few weeks ago where Ahmad Chalabi's intelligence chief was in fact an Iranian agent to pass on misinformation and disinformation to the neocons that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. So Iran manipulated America through Chalabi and his aides; and now it is the Iranians who have had the last laugh because America toppled Saddam and inadvertently prepared the ground for a Shia rise to power. America destroyed a secular Sunni regime, which is going to be replaced by a Shia regime that is going to be much more friendly and acceptable to Iran. If true, this is one of the greatest intelligence coups of modern times.

INSIDE THE AXIS OF DECEIT...
[Mother Jones - August 16, 2004]
As a senior analyst at Australia's top intelligence agency, Andrew Wilkie
had high-level access to the raw data streaming in before the Iraq war.
Unlike his country's prime minister, John Howard, who fully supported the
U.S. case for invading Iraq, Wilkie saw little in the intelligence to
suggest that Saddam was an imminent threat. Just a few days before the U.S.,
UK and Australia led the "Coalition of the Willing" into Iraq, Wilkie quit
ONA in protest. He took his case against the Howard government public, most
recently in a book, "Axis of Deceit," which details how the case for war was
politicized in Canberra, London, and Washington.
"Intelligence is inherently ambiguous. That's just the nature of the
way it’s collected there are always uncertainties, and the intelligence
agencies know that. The agencies will invariably give very measured and
carefully qualified advice to government. That was, in fact, the finding of
this recent Philip Flood report in Australia. The official government
inquiry has found and these are the words used by Flood himself --
that the intelligence agencies gave “cautious and qualified advice.”
"But that cautious sort of advice was, of course, not the style of what was
being said by George Bush or Cheney or Wolfowitz or Rumsfeld or John
Howard or Alexander Downer. To them, the advice was always strong and
unambiguous; it always had those qualifications removed.
And the qualifications were normally just simple words like “could,” as in
“Iraq could be doing this,” qualifications like “uncorroborated evidence
suggests” or caveats like “intelligence suggests.” Words like “suggests,”
“could,” “can’t be ruled out” or “uncorroborated.” And those words were
almost always dropped from the official government statements. In doing
so, all our governments – very deliberately, very mischievously and very
dishonestly – turned uncertainty into certainty. And that completely
reengineered the threat posed by Iraq."
Mais c'est pas grave, on a juste "miscalculated"...

Toujours Avi Shlaim:
Quel est le poids du lobby juif à la Maison Blanche ?
WHY DON'T THEY SAY THEY'RE JEWISH ?
[The Nation - interview Avi Shlaim - 16.06.04]
** Question = Recently the Canadian anticonsumerism magazine Adbusters created an uproar when it pointed out that most of the intellectual architects of the Iraq war were Jewish, with a history of pro-Israel activity. Daniel Pipes, a Zionist militant and one of the "outed" neocons, said the article was absurd "because of the implication that religion defines politics." Pipes himself has campaigned for years to have American Muslims put under government surveillance because of their religion, saying that within the United States "all Muslims, unfortunately, are suspect." Do you think it is right that Jewish--and Muslim, for that matter--policy-makers and intellectuals should be held to account if there is a suspicion of dual loyalty, or do you think the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust should give Jewish groups and individuals a degree of absolution from such charges?
** Avi Shlaim : I think it is inaccurate to claim that American Jews were the principal force behind the war in Iraq. It is true that some of the neoconservatives happen to be Jewish, but not all of them. Vice President Cheney and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld are not. I would divide the proponents of the Iraq war into two groups: One would be the Jewish neoconservatives to whom the security of Israel is paramount--their thinking was that by destroying the Baath regime in Baghdad they would cut off a major source of support for Palestinian militants and create a new environment that would be much more conducive to peace between Israel and the Palestinians on Israel's terms. The other group, led by Cheney and Rumsfeld, I would label the American nationalists, who after 9/11 felt that a very strong response was called for; they wanted to use US military power to strike at America's opponents. The nationalists wanted to assert American supremacy and insure American domination globally, and in the Middle East in particular. So there are two agendas here: the nationalists' and the Jewish neocons'. Both nationalists and Jewish neocons support Israel's occupation of the West Bank. One can argue that the occupation of the West Bank is in Israel's interest; but no logical argument has ever been made that the occupation serves any American interest. My conclusion is that the neocon agenda for the new Middle East incorporates a right-wing Likud agenda, and the link with Israel deepens hostility to American actions in Iraq.

NO GOVERNMENT FUNDS FOR UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS CRITICAL OF AMERICAN AND ISRAELI POLICIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST
[The Nation - interview Avi Shlaim - 16.06.04]
** Question : Daniel Pipes is also the founder of Campus Watch (accused by some of modern-day McCarthyism), which monitors and exposes Middle East academics for alleged anti-Israel activity. Recently he and his friends have managed to get a bill proposed in Congress that would prohibit government funds from university programs critical of American and Israeli policies in the Middle East. Can you see the range of academic debate available on Middle Eastern studies dramatically contracting in the near future?
** Avi Shlaim : Yes, I think there are already signs of the curbing of academic freedom in America. The "war on terror" has been used as an excuse for denying all sorts of civil liberties as well as academic freedoms. Campus Watch is one of the most sinister and deplorable examples of the fallout of 9/11 in America, because what defines a university is complete freedom of expression, and the people behind Campus Watch are responsible for a direct assault on this basic and fundamental academic right. The sad truth is that they have had quite a lot of support from Congress, and the proposed legislation would end federal funding for campuses held to be anti-Israeli--and of course "anti-Israeli" is a very loose term, which can be attached to anyone whose views he happens to disagree with (Pipes described Shlaim's War and Peace in the Middle East as "1994's worst book on the Middle East," adding that "Shlaim's extreme-left outlook inspires an anti-American and anti-Israel animus of rare vintage")
. This is an extremely disturbing phenomenon on the American political and university scene.

RUMSFELD MISLEADS ABOUT PRISON ABUSE
[Daily Misleader 27.08.04]
Speaking yesterday in Phoenix, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld claimed that there was no way that he and other top military officials could have known about the abuse and torture that took place at Abu Ghraib and other prisons. But a classified portion of a report by three Army generals (the Fay report) - obtained by the New York Times - found that the atrocities that took place in military prisons were the result of actions taken at the top of the military hierarchy. A separate investigation headed by former defense secretary James R. Schlesinger "faulted the Pentagon's top civilian and military leadership yesterday for failing to exercise adequate oversight and allowing conditions that led to the abuse of detainees in Iraq." Rumsfeld was cited specifically for contributing to "confusion over what techniques were permissible for interrogating prisoners in Iraq."

ICANN IS "OUT OF CONTROL, " VERISIGN HARMED
[Bill Atkinson - PFF 31.08.04]
As VeriSign's complaint and numerous critiques confirm, ICANN is out of control. It was created to promote competition in domain name services (DNS), given a very narrow regulatory mandate, and directed to meet basic standards of fair and open decision-making. It has adopted an increasingly expansive view of its regulatory mandate while providing virtually no procedural protections to affected parties. And its processes are clearly subject to capture. As a result, ICANN is delaying indefinitely the introduction of beneficial services.
