ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER DEPRIVED OF SEX BY DEMOCRAT WIFE

[Monterey County Herald 28.10.04]
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, is married to the staunch Democratic niece of former President John F. Kennedy. At a lecture in Seaside, Calif., Schwarzenegger said the presidential debates were not a big deal in his house. If he wanted to hear a Republican-Democratic debate, he said, "I'd just take my wife out to dinner." Bush and Kerry only had to debate three times, he says, but "I have to do it every morning over breakfast." And asked what his wife thought about his speech at the Republican National Convention, Schwarzenegger replied, "Well, there was no sex for 14 days."

E-VOTING MACHINE COUNTS BACKWARD FROM 32,000

[Palm Beach Post 05.11.04]
Early Thursday, as Broward County elections officials wrapped up after a long day of canvassing votes, something unusual caught their eye... Officials found the software used in Broward can handle only 32,000 votes per precinct. After that, the system starts counting backward... The problem cropped up in the 2002 election.(Broward County Mayor Ilene Lieberman)said ES&S told her it had sent software upgrades to the Florida Secretary of State's office, but that the office kept rejecting the software. The state said that's not true. Broward elections officials said they had thought the problem was fixed... After several calls to the company during the day were not returned, an ES&S spokeswoman said late Thursday she did not know whether ES&S contacted the secretary of state two years ago or whether the software is designed to count backward... Snipes said she had not known about the 2002 snafu."

E-VOTING MACHINE TALLIES 3,893 FAKE VOTES FOR BUSH

[WCMH-TV 4 Columbus 05.11.04]
An error with an electronic voting system gave President Bush 3,893 extra votes in suburban Columbus, elections officials said. Franklin County's unofficial results had Bush receiving 4,258 votes to Democrat John Kerry's 260 votes in a precinct in Gahanna. Records show only 638 voters cast ballots in that precinct. Bush's total should have been recorded as 365... there were no signs of other errors in Ohio's electronic machines, said Carlo LoParo, spokesman for Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell... In one North Carolina county, more than 4,500 votes were lost in this election because officials mistakenly believed a computer that stored ballots electronically could hold more data than it did."

ELECTION SOFTWARE PRODUCES WRONG VOTE TOTALS

[Jacksonville Daily News 05.11.04]
Delma Collins left the Board of Elections on Tuesday night thinking he finished in fifth place - just above the cut - in the Onslow County commissioners race. Turns out, after the final figures were announced, he finished first, an error caused by a software mix-up. The error, which was caught by state Rep. Robert Grady, R-Onslow, as he was observing the ballot counting, created a new order in the top five finishers among the county commissioner candidates... 'It concerns me that it reached the point that it did, that all the news outlets were given the wrong totals, that the public was misinformed, and that it had not been caught,' Grady said. 'It did not change who won and who lost, but it could have, and it is frightening. To have every precinct, plus the one-stop and absentee ballots, totaled incorrectly, and to have the people leave thinking they know the results is wrong.'"

E-VOTING MACHINES CAUGHT SWITCHING VOTES

[InfoWorld 05.11.04]
U.S. voters calling in to a toll-free number had reported more than 1,100 separate incidents of problems with electronic voting machines and other voting technologies by late Tuesday during the nationwide election. In more than 30 reported cases, when voters reviewed their choices before finalizing them, an electronic voting machine indicated they had voted for a different candidate... In a majority of cases where machines allegedly recorded a wrong vote, votes were taken away from Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, or a Democratic candidate in another race, and given to Republican President George Bush or another Republican candidate, said Cindy Cohn, legal director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation... 'We're only hearing from people who caught it,' Cohn said during a press conference... 'It gives us this uneasy feeling we're seeing the tip of the iceberg.'"

Castor sanglant !!!

UN ANTINUCLÉAIRE TUÉ PAR LE CONVOI QU'IL VOULAIT BLOQUER

[AFP 08.11.04]

FINANCING MASS MURDER : HOW FREE-MARKET INVESTORS CONTRIBUTE TO GENOCIDE IN DARFUR WHILE THEY TAKE THE PROFITS

[Village voice October 8th, 2004]
When you read about Khartoum's helicopters bombing villages in Darfur as a prelude to the murderous raids by the Arab Janjaweed, who are often accompanied by official Khartoum troops, you may not have realized that, as Eric Reeves continues:

"Khartoum's extensive military purchases, especially over the last half-dozen years, have been made possible by virtue of realized and anticipated oil revenues. These purchases include many of the helicopter gunships that have been deployed to such deadly effect against civilians in both southern Sudan and Darfur. A measure of the profligacy of Khartoum's military purchases can be seen in the recent completion of a deal with Russia for 10 MiG-29s—one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world.""

For six years, the most passionate, meticulous researcher on the atrocities committed on black Africans in Sudan by the Khartoum government has been Eric Reeves, a professor of English at Smith College in Massachusetts. With prodigious energy, he devotes most of his time to writing about this holocaust and informing others, including me.

CHILE COMES BACK TO HAUNT KISSINGER

[The UK Guardian 04.11.04]
Henry Kissinger may face extradition proceedings in connection with the role of the United States in the 1973 military coup in Chile. The former US secretary of state is wanted for questioning as a witness in the investigation into the events surrounding the overthrow of the socialist president, Salvador Allende, by General Augusto Pinochet. It focuses on CIA involvement in the coup, whether US officials passed lists of leftwing Americans in Chile to the military and whether the US embassy failed to assist Americans deemed sympathetic to the deposed government."

MERCY AND MURDER AT ISSUE IN IRAQ DEATH

[Los Angeles Times 05.11.04]
Two U.S. soldiers face charges after taking life of injured youth. They say he was already gone. (..) As soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment approached the burning vehicle, they did not find insurgents. The victims were mainly teenagers, hired to work the late shift picking up trash for about $5 a night, witnesses said.

Medics scrambled to treat the half a dozen people strewn around the scene. A dispute broke out among a handful of soldiers standing over one severely wounded young man who was moaning in pain. An unwounded Iraqi claiming to be a relative of the victim pleaded in broken English for soldiers to help him..

But to the horror of bystanders, Alban, 29, a boyish-faced sergeant who joined the Army in 1997, retrieved an M-231 assault rifle and fired into the wounded man's body. Seconds later, another soldier, Staff Sgt. Johnny Horne Jr., 30, of Winston-Salem, N.C., grabbed an M-16 rifle and also shot the victim.

The killing might have been forgotten except for a U.S. soldier who days later slipped an anonymous note under the door of the unit's commander, Capt. Robert Humphries, warning that "soldiers had committed serious crimes that needed to be looked at."

U.S. officials have since characterized the shooting as a "mercy killing," citing statements by Alban and Horne that they shot the wounded Iraqi "to put him out of his misery."

OFFICER FLEES WITH BATTLE PLAN

[News.com November 7, 2004]
An Iraqi military commander deserted US forces hours after he received a full briefing on US military plans to storm the rebel-held city of Fallujah, CNN reported today.

But a report sent to Reuters and other media from a marine unit quoted US officers as saying the desertion of the unidentified captain, a Kurdish company commander, would not change plans to retake the city before Iraqi elections scheduled for January 27.

They said they believe the officer, who commanded 160 Iraqi soldiers training with US marines at a base on the outskirts of Fallujah, was not likely to hand over battle plans to rebels in the Sunni Muslim city, where Saddam Hussein loyalists and supporters of al-Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi are entrenched.

"This man has no known ties with Fallujah and they (the US military) don't believe in the first instance that he is headed for Fallujah. They believe that since the captain is a Kurd, he is more likely headed up north and going home," the report said.

AL QAQAA PLUNDERED RIGHT IN FRONT OF US TROOPS

[Seattle Times 04.11.04]
"In the weeks after the fall of Baghdad, Iraqi looters loaded powerful explosives into pickups and drove the material off the al-Qaqaa ammunition site, according to a group of U.S. Army reservists and National Guardsmen who said they witnessed the looting... Soldiers from one unit - the 317th Support Center based in Wiesbaden, Germany - said they sent a message to commanders in Baghdad requesting help to secure the site, but received no reply... 'We were running from one side of the compound to the other side, trying to kick people out,' said one senior noncommissioned officer who was at the site in late April 2003. 'On our last day there, there were at least 100 vehicles waiting at the site for us to leave' so that they could come in and loot munitions. 'It was complete chaos. It was looting like L.A. during the Rodney King riots.'"

BEHEADING VIDEOS REPLACE PORN AS FAVORITES IN BAGHDAD

[Asian Sex Gazette September 28, 2004]
Baghdad - In an outdoor food market under the fierce midday sun, a crowd of men and boys were watching video footage of a truck bomber seated behind the steering wheel, smiling and murmuring his last words before crashing into U.S. military vehicles on an overpass. Elsewhere, the TV set in a coffee shop was offering customers the video of foreign hostages being beheaded. "Soon after the regime fell, porno discs were all the rage," said Attallah Zeidan, a co-owner of a second hand bookshop in Baghdad's Old City. "Now it's beheadings."

BREAKING RANKS : MORE AND MORE U.S. SOLDIERS ARE SPEAKING OUT AGAINST THE WAR IN IRAQ - AND SOME ARE REFUSING TO FIGHT.

[Mother Jones - October 11 , 2004]
In a 2003 Gallup Poll, nearly one-fifth of the soldiers surveyed said they felt the situation in Iraq had not been worth going to war over. In another poll, in Pennsylvania last August, 54 percent of households with a member in the military said the war was the “wrong thing to do”; in the population as a whole, only 48 percent felt that way. Doubts about the war have contributed to the decline of troop morale over the past year—and may, some experts say, be a factor in the 40 percent increase in Army suicide rates in Iraq in the past year. "“That’s the most basic tool a soldier needs on the battlefield—a reason to be there,” says Paul Rieckhoff,... ""

U.S. CASUALTIES GRIM COST OF IRAQ WAR

[Toronto Star 26.09.04]
LANDSTUHL, Germany - At the U.S. military hospital on a wooded hilltop here, the cost of the Iraq war is measured in amputated limbs, burst eyeballs, shrapnel-torn bodies and shattered lives. They're the seriously wounded U.S.. soldiers who arrive daily at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a growing human toll that belies American election talk of improving times in Iraq.

(...)His seared hands are sliced opened to prevent the need for amputation due to swelling. His dead skin is scraped off, a gel is spread thick to prevent infections, and his arms are wrapped in thick, white bandages. "He's very unstable," says Hecker, 70. Hecker retired from the military years ago but recently left his lucrative private practice in Detroit to save lives at Landstuhl.

"I'm here for him, nobody else," he says, pointing to the soldier. "I didn't come here for my government." He pauses, then blurts out: "Bush is an idiot." Immediately, he regrets having said that about the U.S. president, and makes clear he's been under enormous stress."

Bagdad libérée, c'est vachement riant...

BEING A JOURNALIST IN BAGHDAD IS LIKE BEING UNDER HOUSE-ARREST

[Poynter /9/29/2004]
From: Farnaz Fassihi : Being a foreign correspondent in Baghdad these days is like being under virtual house arrest. Forget about the reasons that lured me to this job: a chance to see the world, explore the exotic, meet new people in far away lands, discover their ways and tell stories that could make a difference.

Little by little, day-by-day, being based in Iraq has defied all those reasons. I am house bound. I leave when I have a very good reason to and a scheduled interview. I avoid going to people's homes and never walk in the streets. I can't go grocery shopping any more, can't eat in restaurants, can't strike a conversation with strangers, can't look for stories, can't drive in any thing but a full armored car, can't go to scenes of breaking news stories, can't be stuck in traffic, can't speak English outside, can't take a road trip, can't say I'm an American, can't linger at checkpoints, can't be curious about what people are saying, doing, feeling. And can't and can't.

There has been one too many close calls, including a car bomb so near our house that it blew out all the windows. So now my most pressing concern every day is not to write a kick-ass story but to stay alive and make sure our Iraqi employees stay alive. In Baghdad I am a security personnel first, a reporter second.

HOW TECHNOLOGY FAILED IN IRAQ

[MIT TechReview 04.11.04]
The Iraq War was supposed to be a preview of the new U.S. military: a light, swift force that relies as much on sensors and communication networks as on heavy armor and huge numbers. But once the shooting started, it now appears, the technology fell far short of expectations. Senior Editor David Talbot's exclusive report, based in part on a forthcoming, largely classified Rand study on the Iraq campaign, shows that one key node fell off the U.S. intelligence network: the front-line troops.

KILL VOICE SPAM BEFORE IT GROWS

[MIT TechReview 11.10.04]
It's a reality that isn't often mentioned when people discuss the nascent voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology that is transforming the telecommunications industry. But the open nature of a VoIP phone call makes it easy for spammers to send audio-commercials to people's VoIP voice-mail inboxes in much the same way they carpet bomb e-mail inboxes today. Spammers have come close to ruining e-mail--and threaten to do the same to Internet telephony. Eric Hellweg writes that now is the time to stop them.

BOOKLET THAT UPSET MRS. CHENEY IS HISTORY

[LA Times 08.10.04]
The Education Department this summer destroyed more than 300,000 copies of a booklet designed for parents to help their children learn history after the office of Vice President Dick Cheney's wife complained that it mentioned the National Standards for History, which she has long opposed.

Lynne Cheney, the wife of now-Vice President Cheney, led a vociferous campaign complaining that the standards were not positive enough about America's achievements and paid too little attention to figures such as Gen.. Robert E. Lee, Paul Revere and Thomas Edison. The standards contained repeated references to the Ku Klux Klan and to Sen. Joseph McCarthy, the anti-Communist demagogue of the 1950s, she said. And she noted that Harriet Tubman, the escaped slave who helped run the Underground Railroad, was mentioned six times.

THERE ARE MANY ALTERNATIVES TO PAYPAL

[Email de Paypal Warning]
Difficulties with PayPal are pretty widely reported on sites such as and elsewhere, but alternative payment services are not so widely known, it seems.

I report on the many alternatives in the free market money section of my Indomitus Report every week. The free sample issue covers a large number of the alternatives.
http://indomitus.net/

Alternatives include e-gold.com with several million accounts, some $30 million in current circulation, and around a billion dollars a year in throughput. Numerous sites with tutorials, such as which is my personal favorite. For the offshore enthusiast, there is 1MDC.com which works with e-gold but stores data about your transactions in Anguilla. Both e-gold and 1MDC offer excellent automation systems for shopping carts.
http://ezez.com/

e-Bullion.com has about 250,000 accounts, some $12 million in circulation. They offer gold, silver, and "e-currency" which is a dollar transfer service. Their Cryptocard security is top-notch. They recently moved their servers to Switzerland, a respected financial privacy haven. A good quality automation system is available for shopping cart interfaces.

GoldMoney.com has a bit more gold in circulation than e-gold, but only about 15,000 accounts. Corporate governance is excellent and the system is audited. Their servers are on the Channel Isle of Jersey, a worthy financial privacy haven. A truly outstanding automation interface.

Pecunix.com is much smaller in terms of circulation and users, but has excellent security features and will encrypt all communications to your PGP key if you wish. Servers on New Zealand.

LibertyDollar.org offers gold and silver specie, paper and digital warehouse certificates. We aren't deeply enthusiastic about their automation interface. Servers in Indiana and metal stored in Idaho, so a bit domestic..

Evocash.com offers an online payment system comparable to PayPal in that it is a dollar transfer service. Probably several million accounts. Circulation figures are unpublished. Servers are probably in Spain.

A lot of people seem to like MoneyBookers.com. Online casinos seem to like Neteller. Overseas, we've seen a lot of interest in former Soviet countries in WebMoney. There's also quite a bit of activity in interchange, such as cyfrocash, myicis.com, cambist.net, and open2exchange.com which offer various online exchanges.

The short of it is that there are many online payment services to choose from. It simply isn't the case "that PayPal is a de facto monopoly for internet payments." Rather, PayPal seems to be a widely used system that has a lot of problems. It may have the most market share, but it also has the most trenchant critics and a great many fundamental deficits.

THE FOG OF WAR - sortie en salles le 14 janvier
